RIP Richard Whiteley

The host of Channel 4’s longest running programme, Countdown, has died aged 61 following heart surgery and a recent battle with pneumonia. Richard Whiteley may have had truly horrendous dress sense and an terrible line in puns, he clearly must have been doing something right to present a show that has been going for 23 years with no signs of losing popularity. He seemed to be a genuinely friendly person who will no doubt be missed by the huge legions of fans that his show has acquired over the years.

What’s your Bloginality?

Over at Bloginality (not Firefox friendly) I just took their bloggers personality test - based on the Myers-Brigg personality test, it applies your personality type to deduce the type of blogger you should be. I came out as ISTJ, and this is what that should mean for bloggers:

As a weblogger, you may will have a dependable form of posting. You may be more likely to be judgemental toward others who aren’t as dependable. You may get taken advantage of in group situations because you are known as not being able to say no. Because of your respect for facts and information, you may need multiple blogs to keep all of the information sorted in your head.

I can’t say that that is a particularly accurate description of my blogging behaviour… though this description of the ISTJ personality at personalitypage.com seems amazingly accurate, considering that you are only asked four questions in order to ascertain your type.

A sizzling day’s cricket

Me and my Dad spent Thursday at Chester-le-Street watching England be comprehensively beaten by Australia. It seemed that Australia, batting first, had been restricted to a chaseable total of 266, but England's top order batsmen failed to cope with vastly improved Australian bowling and only managed 209-9 in reply. If Darren Gough had not scored 46 not out late in the innings, it could have been even more embarrassing. It seemed that a good day was had by all 15,000 spectators though. Fortunately they were dishing out free sun cream at the ground - but I may have missed a spot…

Paul Collingwood - cricket legend!

Picture from bbc.co.uk

Congratulations go to Durham cricketer Paul Collingwood who wrote his name in cricket history in some style tonight as England comprehensively beat Bangladesh by 168 runs in a one day international at Trent Bridge. He scored the second-quickest century by an England player, then became the first player ever to score 100 runs and take 6 wickets in a one day international. This all comes after he executed one of the all-time great catches in the match against Australia on Sunday.
Hopefully these outstanding performances will cement his place in the side for the duration of the summer, as we look to continue to humiliate the Aussies… :)

Hailstones in late June? Must be the north-east…

I’ve moved back home to Durham now for the summer. The motorbike ride back on Saturday was really nice - a hot sunny day perfect for the trip. It’s been similarly lovely all day today - but yesterday was a bit… variable…
Hot, sunny, humid weather until about 4pm suddenly gave way to real blackness, very heavy rain, thunder and lightning, and hailstones in nearby towns apparently! It was really lashing down, but obviously not as much as it was in parts of North Yorkshire - not far at all from the A19 I rode up in perfect conditions maybe 30 hours earlier. It must be a nightmare for the weather to turn so suddenly for the worse and for your house to be under several feet of flood water.
Today, everything’s dry again and it’s like it never happened. Unless you still have a few feet of silt in your cellar…

Will the real Katie Holmes please stand up?

Maybe I’m getting cynical in my old age but I seriously doubt this is the real person…?
