I finally graduated this week with my MEng in Chemical Process Engineering from The University of Sheffield, after five years of relentless torment I picked up my (remarkably creased) gown, had some posh photos taken, took my parents for a tour around my department, shook the Chancellor’s hand, ate a meal high in cow, took a few more pictures, and came home. Simple as that

Meet my new bike. I think I shall call it Tweety…
Just for the record, Tweety was there before I bought it - but I think TP will be staying on It’s a Suzuki Bandit 600SK3, 21 months old, in pretty much pristine condition and with only 1,600 miles on the clock. It has a top box (which I detached before taking the picture,) so there is some reasonable luggage carrying capacity. It’s… ‘nippy’ compared to my old bike, the CB250, so I don’t think I’ll be getting bored with it any time soon
I picked it up from Eddy Wright Motorcycles in Leeds yesterday. I actually found it surprisingly easy to ride - I was expecting it to feel much heavier than my previous bike, but it actually felt quite similar and, barring a couple of stalls while getting used to the clutch, the journey home was uneventful. The insects certainly seem to like it - it must look like a peculiarly shaped flower to them…

Having seen it mentioned on The Register today, I found about about a new site called Yelp today. It’s only available in a few US cities so far (and hence currently useless to me) but they are looking to expand in the near future.
The idea is simple. You sign up to the site and invite your friends. You then each write reviews about local facilities, e.g. restaurants, clubs, garages on the site. Then, when you want to find out about something, you search on the site to see if one of your trusted friends has already reviewed it. If not, it looks to see if someone they trust has reviewed it, and so on. In this way, you find out information that you can depend on more than a traditional review site.
Why didn’t anyone think of this before?
For a more in-depth analysis of the site, see this article The Register wrote last year.

As if to prove that Britain is incapable of dealing with any type of weather, some of the roads in my local area are melting as a result of the current high temperatures. Now if they actually used proper resurfacing techniques instead of just resealing the road surface with a layer of tar and chippings, maybe it wouldn’t break up at 30C?
As a motorcyclist, this rudimentary road repairing is especially annoying. In the days following the laying of the chippings, they are pressed into the tar by traffic - but this tends to leave a strip of loose chippings in the centre of each lane, right where a motorbike is travelling. Not the best situation to be in!

My Honda CB250 is now up for sale on eBay… no doubt pictures of my new bike will appear rather soon after I collect it in a week…

I imagine today’s explosions in London were timed to coincide with the G8 meeting in Gleneagles, but it just shows how much the Metropolitan Police must have been groaning when London were awarded the 2012 Olympics yesterday - it will be a complete security nightmare.
My condolences go to the families of those killed or injured today.
