Back - via the Far East

After a protracted absence caused by lots of moving and whatnot, I’m finally back in Sheffield and about to start my chemical engineering PhD next week - a scary prospect indeed, I’m sure I’ve forgotten everything I know over the summer!! I hope it comes flooding back or I’ll be in huge trouble…

During the moving I went to Hong Kong for 10 days. It’s the first time I’ve been outside Europe and it was a great trip. The sheer scale of everything over there is immense in comparison to what I experience in the UK. There was far too much to see in the few days I was there. I mainly stayed in the central area, guided by my friend from university who grew up there and kindly gave me her floor for the trip. The weather didn’t feel as extreme as I expected, just a bit hotter than a typical British hot summer’s day with the associated humidity. The brutal air conditioning in buildings and on the transport did cause some trouble though - I caught a hell of a cold…!
Hong Kong is a fantastic place that everyone should visit - with Western ideas about the costs of living, your day to day expenses actually shouldn’t be very much since food and transport is very cheap, though I can’t vouch for the cost of hotels, etc.
