I finally got round to having the induction for my membership of the university gym S10Health today - I can’t say I’ve been looking forward to it too much. Whilst the special offer was enough to tempt me to join up to try and get a bit fitter, I’m not exactly your stereotypical gym dweller!
True to form, the two other who were being done (so to speak) at the same time as me were in somewhat better shape and had clearly used gyms before, so I was under a bit of pressure. Being first up to try the cross-trainer certainly wasn’t an easy start (how un-natural are those things?!) Through the treadmill and the resistance machines things didn’t improve much, but I lived to tell the tale No doubt things will be more comfortable when I can ‘play’ with them at my leisure.

You’d think if you got a brand new PC delivered by a reputable company like Viglen that it would last you for years, wouldn’t you? Mine lasted about two minutes….
I got halfway through the Windows XP setup screens when it all but shut down - the power light stayed on but fans and everything else stopped. I didn’t like the (absence of) sound of that. Seeing as it had taken over a fortnight to arrive I didn’t fancy waiting for a repair engineer to come, so I decided to take the cover off so see if there were any obvious signs of loose wires, gooey components or mangled fans…. None of those things were obvious so I just put it back together and gave it one last go. And it worked. I swear these things are possessed sometimes!

It makes a change to be right!

The London Evening Standard is reporting that Daniel Craig is to be the next James Bond. He doesn’t look like much of a Bond to me - but then aren’t they going to take Q and all the gadgets out for this one? If they’re going to destroy the format I guess they may as well do it in style.

It’s all coming together… I’ll have a desk tomorrow, a computer by the end of the week and a pay cheque in a week (allegedly) - it does feel a bit bad to have to evict someone from their desk so I can have one though. It’s a shame I don’t have a clue on the way, seeing as I have to meet my supervisor tomorrow… could be nasty.
Oh, and I’m getting the hang of free coffee

It’s very early days in my existence as a postgraduate. Indeed, even the well-oiled administrative machine of the university hasn’t managed to produce a desk, computer or a pay cheque for me yet. Still, it’s only a week since they were due.
Making the transition from undergraduate to postgraduate is a bit odd, in that you have to remember that you are actually entitled to those extra little privileges like free printing, copying and coffee! But I’m sure I’ll get the hang of it eventually
Things would be easier if it wasn’t for the fact that my hearing has gone all crap on me. Holding conversations is a bit of a nightmare, especially where there is background noise and/or the person is not a native English speaker, as is often the case in a truly international environment like a university engineering department. The doc has referred me to the hospital to have my ear checked out, but unfortunately the best the NHS can offer me is a 4 month wait - having said that, apparently the wait for an ENT consultation in Sheffield used to be closer to 10 months, so at least it’s still not that bad….
