First injections

I had my first G-CSF (Granulocyte Colony Stimulating Factor) injections today.  I have two a day until Monday.  The idea is that this hormone eventually persuades the relevant stem cells to be produced in large numbers, leave the bone marrow, and to migrate into my bloodstream, from where they'll be harvested on Tuesday (and Wednesday if necessary).

I'm told I might feel like I've got the 'flu once it gets working but I'm ok so far.  The nurse from Healthcare At Home had to hang around for a while after the injections to check my pulse and blood pressure stayed stable, and also to check I felt ok and hadn't turned into Shrek or whatever :)

For anyone who hasn't followed this story previously, click the red bordered box on the left to find out more about my bone marrow donation and how you could help others.

The joke’s lost in transmission…

A shocking pun from Mike Brown, posting on the tx-list mailing list:

"I am organising a Europe-wide chat tonight at 19.00 GMT culminating in an online poll to find people's favourite antenna. It will be interesting to see if any get null points."

If don't know of the Eurovision Song Contest, and/or you're not a wireless communications anorak than that will mean nothing to you.  I apologise profusely.

They’re listening now!

I remember a lecturer at my university once telling me that strikes by university lecturers were pointless, because no-one paid any attention to them, the students suffered, and they only meant the lecturers had to catch up on their work later.

Well, attention is certainly being paid to the current dispute

The Monster is finally on the road!

Well it has been seven weeks since I bought my new motorbike, but it has taken until today for insurance to be arranged, the battery to be charged back up, then finally for the alarm/immobiliser to actually do what I was telling it to!

Once I got it going, it was only polite to take it for a run out into the Peak District… I stopped off along the way to get some nice pictures for you all to enjoy :)

The donation is *definitely* on

The Anthony Nolan Trust informed me today that I passed my medical so I will be starting my course of injections a fortnight today and travelling to London on 29th May for the stem cell harvest the following day.  No turning back now!

Pollen invasion!

Dscn2618big.jpgThe east coast of England has suffered something of a bizarre pollen plague over the last couple of days - a massive release of birch pollen in Scandinavia has been carried over to the UK and dumped itself on every car, window sill and wheelie (sp?) bin along the coast.

As this (admittedly average) photo shows, I can confirm that the invasion has made it as far inland as Sheffield too - the picture shows the build-up on one of my window sills this evening.  Although I have suffered mild hayfever during the last two summers, the mere fact that I can still see and breathe during this deluge at least gives me the impression that it's not a birch pollen allergy! :)
